Environmental Protection and Sustainable Development in CUBA!
Research Delegation
June 4 - 13, 2010
February 2010
Dear Friends and Colleagues,
We invite you to join us on a research delegation to Cuba, June 4 - 13, 2010, to study Cuba’s remarkable progress in environmental protection and sustainable development in both Havana and in rural Cuba. In 2006, the World Wildlife Fund declared Cuba to be the only country in the world to achieve sustainable development due to its high human development level and low ecological footprint. How did Cuba achieve this distinction despite issues of poverty, devastating annual hurricanes and the U.S. embargo?
This research delegation is an opportunity to learn about Cuba’s accomplishments, struggles, developing policies and programs in organic agriculture, urban gardens, energy self sufficiency, management of protected areas, environmental education, and other related areas of ecological interest. We will meet with representatives from Cuban environmental NGO’s, government ministries and educational institutions. We will visit sites of environmental significance and see first hand how Cuba has become a possible model of sustainable development for the developing world.
For more information on the research delegation, and for articles on Cuba’s policies and practices in environmental protection and sustainable development during the last two decades, check out this web page:
